January 26, 2011

The Kentucky Environmental Education Council is offering students a chance to win $800 to support eco-friendly projects in school.Students in Kentucky have the opportunity to earn their schools money while also increasing energy efficiency by applying for an energy-saving grant from the Kentucky Environmental Education Council, the Associated Press recently reported.

According to the news wire, students can receive grants totaling $800 to pay for projects that promote environmentally sustainable practices in schools. Projects may include efforts to reduce energy, waste and water consumption, or they may promote other eco-friendly practices, such as planting trees.

To apply for the grant, students must submit an application describing their project. Applications can be found on the Kentucky Green & Healthy Schools website.

Several types of technology are currently available to help schools go green. For example, schools can implement rooftop solar panels, an energy-efficient lighting system or a mercury-free classroom projector to reduce both their carbon footprint and their energy expenditure.

Schools can submit as many application as they want. Since its inception in 2009, the program has awarded 17 grants, the Education and Workforce Development Cabinet stated.
