California State University, Monterey Bay will provide scholarships for students interested in pursuing special education careers.California State University, Monterey Bay recently received a $1.1 million grant from the U.S. Department of Education to promote careers in special education and invest in new technology to provide students with access to online courses and videoconferencing, the Monterey County Herald reports.

Intended to be distributed over four years, the grant will provide scholarships for students pursuing careers in teaching people with disabilities in the area. According to the Monterey County Herald, the students can use the grants to pay for tuition, as well as textbooks and technology.

Additionally, a part of the grant will be used to provide students with access to online courses and videoconferencing technology, such as a computer, a tablet PC or an HDMI projector.

"This grant will address the critical shortage of credentialed special educators in the local area," said CSUMB associate professor of special education Josh Harrower.

The renewable grant will support 40 students enrolled in a two-year credential program. The first group of students to receive the scholarships will start in summer and fall of 2011, the Monterey County Herald reports.
