In a rare instance of good news getting better, schools in Washington County, Maryland, recently learned they were receiving more money than expected from the U.S. Department of Education's Race to the Top grant program, Herald Mail reports.
The Maryland State Education Department originally estimated Washington County Public Schools would receive $2.8 million of a $250 million grant from the Race to the Top Fund. Now, the news provider reports, the district is set to receive $3.1 million to invest in improving technology and professional development programs.
One of the key goals of the Race to the Top program is providing funding for schools around the country to improve technology. Educators have found implementing technology, such as broadband internet, laptop computers or an HDMI projector, in classrooms can provide resources that enhance learning experiences for students.
Washington County is also set to receive $7.4 million from a separate federal grant, which it will invest in an evaluation system for educators of students from low-income families, Herald Mail reports.
