Supermarket chain Hy-Vee Food Stores recently awarded five schools in Des Moines, Iowa, interactive whiteboards as part of its Smartpoints competition throughout the Midwest, the Des Moines Register reports.
According to the news provider, shoppers who purchased Proctor & Gamble and Sara Lee products at Hy-Vee locations were able to collect points to go toward their schools. Schools that collected the most points were awarded with interactive whiteboards.
In Des Moines, River Woods Elementary Christ the King Catholic schools received the most points. But Wright Elementary, Grandview Park Baptists and Samuelson Elementary schools received prizes as well.
Each school was awarded with a whiteboard and related components worth $1,500. The technology uses special software, a computer, an infrared pen and an overhead projector and functions similarly to a jumbo-sized touchscreen display, which students can use to run applications, present projects, create charts and more.
"This is exciting for us because it is the technology that the children need to know how to do," said Christ the King principal Becky Johnson.
According to Hy-Vee's website, its Smartpoints program will award at least 200 interactive whiteboards to schools throughout the Midwest.
