The Oak Grove School Education Foundation in Libertyville, Illinois, recently awarded six grants totalling more than $12,000 to fund projects in the district's elementary and junior high schools, the Libertyville Review reports.
The grants were awarded to projects proposed by teachers that met the district's goal of promoting 21st century skills in the classroom, the news provider stated. Criteria also included the promotion of information technology, global awareness, critical thinking, collaboration and leadership.
The largest grant of $6,170 was awarded to Allison Van Alstine's first grade classroom, which used the funds to purchase 21 Apple iPod Touches for students. Other projects included the purchasing of video cameras, science software and a Lego robotics kit, among other items.
Educators have found new technology can be beneficial to the classroom. For example, teachers may use a classroom computer or video camera in conjunction with an HD-TV, LED monitor or HDMI projector to create a learning environment where students are more engaged in the lecture and eager to participate.
Established in 2005, the nine-member Oak Grove School Education Foundation has provided thousands of dollars to support the community. Other projects include cafeteria and playground improvements, the remodeling of a learning center and support for the drama club.
