The U.S. Department of Education recently awarded the Sierra Sands Unified School District of Ridgecrest, California, a grant of $50,000 to invest in new classroom equipment as part of its Enhancing Education Through Technology program, the Daily Independent reports.
According to the news provider, the district plans to invest the money into Burroughs High School. Twenty-five percent of the grant will go toward professional development for teachers, while the remaining 75 percent will be used to purchase new equipment and materials, said Laura Hickle, special projects, assessment and technology coordinator at the school district.
Hickle said the district will purchase a new computer, an interactive whiteboard and a classroom projector for 11 teachers at Burroughs High School. Additionally, all teachers will receive intensive professional development provided by the vendors.
Several schools throughout the state have benefited from the federal government's grant program. For example, Whittier High School, East Whittier City Schools in Whittier and Norwalk-La Mirada Unified School District in Norwalk recently received a combined $1 million from the Enhancing Education Through Technology program to invest in new technology.
