Ashland Independent School District plans to up the software and operating systems on all its computers.Ashland Independent School District recently announced it is upgrading its educational technology and installing "smart" instructional equipment in every classroom by 2012, the Independent reports.

According to the Independent, the school district has already begun the process of converting its classrooms. Approximately 40 percent of the classrooms already utilize smart technology, which includes a computer workstation at the teacher's desk, an interactive whiteboard and an overhead projector.

The school district plans to update all computers with the latest software and operating systems, technology director Cary Williams told the Independent. Additionally, the schools will replace some of their older equipment to support the new software.

The schools will pay for the upgrades through funding from state and federal governments, as well as money from the district and individual schools.

As interactive technology becomes more affordable and accessible, schools are finding way to incorporate it into the classroom. Earlier this month, the Dakota County Alternative Learning School in Rosemont, Minnesota won a grant for its established use of technology in the classroom.
