Five first grade classrooms in Houma, Louisiana, will receive interactive whiteboards, which can be used in conjunction with an overhead projector to promote student participation.First grade students at Mulberry Elementary in Houma, Louisiana, recently got a firsthand look at the new technology that will soon be installed in their classrooms, presented by the state's first lady Supriya Jindal, the Tri-Parish Times reports.

According to the Times, the Supriya Jindal Foundation for Louisiana's Children awarded five first grade classrooms at Mulberry Elementary with new interactive whiteboards because of their high performance.

In addition to the whiteboards, the foundation also provided laptops, response devices for students, installation and training for teachers. The technology can be used in conjunction with an overhead projector to create an interactive learning environment that encourages student participation and continues to fuel their high performance.

"These systems are proven to show a 17 to 19 percentile gain in academic achievement according to a recent study to come out," Jindal said, according to the Times, "so we know that they can continue to achieve even more at this school."

Jindal was joined by 14-year-old pop star Anna Margaret, a Louisiana native, who used the proceeds from a recent concert to help the Jindal Foundation. Margaret said her concert raised between $35,000 and $40,000, according to the Times.
