University of Illinois pushes for green campus

The University of Illinois Student Senate Committee on Environmental Sustainability is encouraging students to go green for Sustainability Week. This week, amid the orange and red of the turning leaves on campus, the Illinois Student Senate Committee on Environmental Sustainability at the University of Illinois in Champaign will be encouraging students to go green during Sustainability Week.

Throughout the week, the university will host a number of events and activities aimed at raising awareness about sustainability and promoting green practices on campus, the Daily Illini reports. Such activities include garden walks, building tours and presentations on various environmental issues.

Sustainability advocate groups will also gather on the campus’ Quad area to raise general awareness on green practices and offer students advice on how they can ensure the university is as eco-friendly as possible.

One thing universities around the country are doing to reduce their carbon footprints is investing in green technology. Furnishing a classroom with sustainable equipment, such as an energy-saving computer, an efficient lighting system or a mercury-free overhead projector, can reduce a school’s energy consumption as well as its expenses.

Last year, the Illinois Student Senate passed five resolutions to encourage sustainability on campus. These resolutions included building campus bike paths, ensuring future construction be more sustainable, encouraging more native vegetation around campus, implementing trayless dining and encouraging the university to install a wind turbine.
