QAD grant funds California elementary school tech upgrade

Teachers at La Patera Elementary have found Smart Carts help increase student participation in lessons.La Patera Elementary School in Goleta, California recently received $24,520 from the QAD Project Upgrade Grant to support the advancement of school’s technology infrastructure, the Santa Barbara Independent reports.

The funds will provide six Smart Carts and eight online reading intervention licenses to enhance student instruction and learning.

Smart Carts are mobile multimedia lecterns consisting of a document camera, DVD player, microphone and LCD classroom projector that can be used in conjunction with a laptop to help bring a new element to lessons.

Teachers and students at La Patera Elementary have found these tools have transformed teacher instruction and student participation in the learning process.

Presently, teachers at La Patera Elementary share a few Smart Carts, but QAD’s funding will enable the school to purchase additional carts for teachers of higher grades as part of the standard equipment in each classroom.

Funding will also be used to provide licensing for Reading Plus, an online reading intervention program, which will be used to help students increase reading fluency rates and boost reading achievement.
