Howard College San Angelo in Big Spring, Texas, recently received a five-year, $3.2 million grant from the federal Strengthening Institutions Hispanic-Serving Institutions Program to address developmental education and update campus technology, the San Angelo Standard Times reports.
The first year of the grant, the community college will receive $637,708, which will be directed toward its Reaching Excellence for All in Developmental Education program to create a centralized developmental education plan, develop and improve tutorial centers, improve professional development activities for faculty and update technology on campus.
Educators have found that using technology in the classroom can help students develop the skills they will need when entering college or the workforce. Connecting a computer to an HD-TV, LED monitor or
DLP projector can enhance the benefits of the new technology by incorporating more students at one time.
With a fall 2010 enrollment of 2,885, Howard College San Angelo is the largest campus in the district. Meanwhile, the area's largest university, San Angelo University, also received a five-year $3.1 million grant from the Strengthening Institutions program to address retention efforts.
