Rochester Institute of Technology in New York has been awarded $13.1 million from the U.S. Department of Commerce’s National Institute of Standards and Technology to help fund the building of a sustainability facility.
The nearly $35 million Golisano Institute of Sustainability building will provide a consolidated research facility that will house sustainability researchers currently spread across six colleges on campus, NIST officials said.
The building itself will serve as a demonstration of sustainability, incorporating a “transparent infrastructure” and a computing data center that allows visitors to see the use of sustainable building technology and energy systems.
Many schools across the country are investing in green equipment to reduce their carbon footprint and set an example for other building projects. Using an energy-saving computer, LED monitor or mercury-free classroom projector can help schools continue to offer a high-level of learning while allowing them to cut down on energy costs.
In designing and constructing the 75,000 square-foot facility, RIT is hoping to earn the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design platinum certification, the highest award by the U.S. Green Building Council.
