Carl Stewart Middle School in Conway, Arkansas, recently invested in new technology to promote student learning.
A $25,000 grant was awarded to the school to provide eighth graders in Tammy McCollum’s classroom with a set of 30 iPads, as well as software and keyboard docks, Today’s THV reports.
McCollum, who teaches career orientation at Carl Stewart Middle School, said she applied for the grant after seeing an advertisement for the iPad. Apple representatives told her in June that her classroom would be the first in the country to receive a set of iPads.
School districts across the country are investing in new technology for the classroom. Educators have found that by introducing new technology, such as a laptop, interactive whiteboard or a classroom projector can help students learn about new technology and prepare for the future.
“I just started thinking about what I could do that would make learning more interesting,” said McCollum. “What could I do that would make researching more interesting for my students.”
The federal Department of Education and several grant organizations are awarding more money to help schools invest in new classroom technology. Publishing giant Houghton Mifflin Harcount recently announced a $300 million investment to help schools purchase iPads and other technology.
