New environmental study recommends move to sustainable technology

A new report calls on businesses to lower their carbon footprint
The International Energy Agency released a new report on Thursday highlighting the need for low-carbon technology, Business Green relays.

The report, titled Energy Technology Perspectives 2010, warned if greenhouse gas emissions don’t start declining by 2020 to acceptable levels established by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, the negative effects of climate change may become irreversible, according to the report.

The IEA is calling for an increase in clean-energy technology from $165 billion annually in 2010 to $750 billion in 2030. Businesses can become more ecofriendly by using an energy-saving computer, sustainable light bulbs or a mercury-free DLP projector.

Some environmental experts state the results of the new survey signal more companies will begin shifting from conventional business practices to ones that are more sustainable.

“Governments, investors and consumers around the world need to take bold steps,” said Robert Bell, chief technical officer at AEA Technology, Business Green relays.

A recent survey of small business owners found the majority of company leaders are on-board with clean-energy initiatives. Sixty-one percent of respondents said clean-energy technology can restart the economy and provide more jobs, with 58 percent stating they want to be a part of the green transformation.
