Report: Green IT can help firms weather recession April 30, 2010
While environmental concerns have not in and of themselves become a more significant consideration for businesses, the economic upsides inherent in most green technologies have been thrown into sharp relief by the recent recession. British tech news website IT Pro said that more and more businesses have looked to green their business technology in recent months. The synergy between cost-cutting and bottom-line boosting has become pronounced and difficult to ignore, experts say. Numerous means can be used to reach sustainability goals, including a switch to cloud computing, modernization of storage operations, and replacing older technology like server farms or business projectors. Cisco Systems UK and Ireland director for sustainability Richard Roberts told IT Pro that "the view was that you could have cost reduction and a carbon agenda and the two could be fairly separate. However, I think what the recession has done is thrown the two together and people have seen the value in having a very, very proactive attitude towards the consumption of energy and what impact that can have in terms of operational efficiency, just from a pure consumption point of view." | Watson makes his way to Boston
