A sure sign that the move toward green IT is taking root across organizations is the news that numerous agencies of the federal government have seized the opportunity to reduce their expenses and help the environment.
One way in which both public- and private-sector IT departments can go greener is to use more modern versions of common office technology, including LCD computer monitors and business projectors, which tend to be much more energy-efficient than older models. These can quickly pay for themselves, given time.
Additionally, some federal agencies have used data storage services from companies like 3PAR to centralize their server operations and take advantage of scalability to save on energy costs. 3PAR reports that its government clients could save as much as $4.2 million over the course of the next five years.
3PAR also says that their services will help its government clients - which include the Department of Energy, the Department of Justice, Office of Personnel Management, and even the U.S. Navy - reduce the carbon footprint created by their extensive IT operations.
