Apple announces HDMI support for DisplayPort, but offers few specifics
April 15, 2010

New MacBooks will feature HDMI supportTuesday's roll-out of a revamped MacBook Pro saw Apple, for the first time, offer support for the popular HDMI display protocol that is widely used in home theater and entertainment center setups.

The same big-screen TVs and HDMI projectors that are common to high-end home theater setups will now be able to accept input directly from the MacBook. Previously, Engadget reports, users would need to find a workaround in order to get high-def content for a MacBook to display properly.

Apple's new MacBook Pro model boasts a number of new improvements in addition to HDMI output. The machine has a new graphics card, significantly increased battery life, and powerful new Intel Core i5 and Core i7 processors to offer improved performance. Apple senior vice president of worldwide product marketing Philip Schiller said that "with faster processors, amazing graphics and up to three more hours of battery life, the new MacBook Pro delivers both performance and efficiency."

Experts say that the new MacBook Pro will occupy a distinctly different market segment than the recently released and widely hyped iPad tablet PC.ADNFCR-3190-ID-19721603-ADNFCR
