The Greater Philadelphia Green Business Program has been in existence for a year, and the organization on Wednesday announced that it had made great strides in greening Philadelphia businesses.
The program said that "participating businesses complete a checklist of green operational practices to achieve either Basic, Silver, Gold or Platinum rankings based on the number of practices they adopt. By making simple changes to daily practices, companies can significantly minimize their carbon footprint, and protect water, air and other natural resources." Such practices frequently include adopting new technology in the office, like energy-efficient business projectors, ultrathin laptops, and virtualized servers.
According to the program, businesses can take advantage of the green technology to positively impact their bottom lines. Energy saving measures don't just target conservation for its own sake, though that is highly important. Most firms require a more immediate and tangible incentive before adopting large-scale changes.
Additionally, experts say, there is a growing impetus in Washington toward the creation of strict new environmental laws, and companies might want to stay ahead of the government inspectors.
